Is it true that electronic parts on car can carry a program in memory w/c is coded to the individual car.a sec

i'm trying to swap my ecu w/ the same match numbers but i'm scared bec. it might introduce new faults to my car,is it true that since 1995 the majority of ECUs carry an identification/immobiliser code.?
