Considered a dependent for financial aid... Really?

How come I am still considered a dependent when I try to fill out my FAFSA form. I'm 23 years old, I have my own house that I pay taxes and homeowners insurance on, I have my own car, my own bills , and I file taxes claiming myself as a dependent. My parents have too many ets for me to qualify for financial aid. I make enough money to pay bills and that's it. I want to go back to school. What would be the best route or can I byp this dependency crap?
